CID Overview

The Texas DPS Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is headed by a chief and assistant chief and consists of more than 850 members, including both commissioned officers and civilian support personnel. Division personnel are stationed in one of the seven regions throughout the state or at the Headquarters office in Austin.

The CID is the criminal investigative branch of the Department charged with conducting organized crime investigations that target transnational gangs, drug trafficking organizations, violent statewide gangs, violent robbery crews, human traffickers, and other organized criminal enterprises. The division is also an integral component of the Department’s responsibility to investigate and respond to threat-to-life incidents throughout the state, including crisis calls, active shooters, threats to schools and law enforcement, the use of weapons of mass destruction, and acts of terrorism, both domestic and international.
