To qualify for a career with the Texas Department of Public Safety, you must be a United States citizen as required by Sec. 411.007(c) of the Texas Government Code.

Proof of US citizenship is required; a certified copy of your birth certificate or naturalization certificate will satisfy this requirement. DPS also utilizes the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) E-Verify system to confirm identity and employment eligibility of each newly hired employee. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age; some positions may have other age requirements.

Thorough background investigations, including criminal history record checks, previous employment verifications, and references are conducted on all prospective employees. Felony convictions and certain misdemeanor convictions will be cause for immediate rejection.

Search for job openings by clicking Job Opportunities. On the job search page, select "Texas Department of Public Safety" from the Company/Agency list under the Organization heading on the left.

Only online applications for employment are accepted by the Texas Department of Public Safety. To submit your application for employment, select the job opening of interest, then click "Apply." You must register as a new user in CAPPS Recruiting and complete your online profile OR sign-in to your existing profile. It is important that your application be complete and thorough. Please include all information requested, e.g. education, experience, previous compensation, reasons for leaving, and other information – do not leave any field blank. Incomplete applications are subject to rejection.

Supporting documents such as transcripts, certifications, and/or licensure may be attached to your online applications.
