Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Handgun Instructor Resources and Course Materials

Renewal Information for LTC Handgun, On-Duty First Responder, School Safety Instructors, and Online Course Providers:

 

For licenses that expired in 2023:

1. You will need to re-certify your license.

2. All LTC forms submitted for your or your students will be rejected until your re-certification is complete. (This includes LTC-100, LTC-101, LTC-103, LTC-103 A, LTC-8, LTC-9, and LTC-10.)

 

For licenses that expire by December 31, 2024:

1. An e-mail containing detailed instructions regarding how to renew your license has been sent to your e-mail address on file. 

2. The renewal process will be conducted online.

3. The renewal period will run from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024.

 

If your license is not renewed by December 31, 2024, you will need to take the following steps:

LTC Handgun Instructors:

1. Submit a Handgun Licensing original application (along with LTC-90).

2. Pay the required fee.

3. Attend the 3-day LTC Certification Instructor Course.

Online Course Providers:

1. Submit an Online Course Provider original application.

2. Pay the required fee.

3. Attend the 3-day LTC Certification Instructor Course.

4. Submit your online course for approval prior to resuming.

On-Duty First Responder Instructors:

1. Submit a First Responder Certification Instructor application.

2. Attend the 3-day On-Duty First Responder Instructor Course.

School Safety Instructors:

1. Submit a School Safety Instructor application.

2. Pay the required fee.

3. Attend the 2-day School Safety Certification Instructor Course.

 

Important Note: Regardless of when you complete your renewal, the LTC Handgun Instructor, On-Duty First Responder, School Safety Instructor, and Online Course Provider certifications will only be valid until December 31, 2025.

 

Additional information:

1. School Safety and On-Duty First Responder Instructor certifications remain valid as long as your qualified handgun instructor certification is up to date and continuously renewed prior to expiration.

2. The handgun demonstration portion must be conducted by another active DPS certified LTC Instructor.  The LTC-100 must be submitted in a timely manner.
