Important Notice
The Texas Ranger Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety is not a general misconduct complaint office for law enforcement agencies. The Ranger Division investigates major criminal cases, public corruption, and complex cases when authorized by law or at the request of a local law enforcement agency or prosecutor. Routine complaints about local police officers, civil disputes, or administrative matters should be directed to the appropriate local agency.
What the Texas Ranger Division Investigates
The Texas Ranger Division may investigate:
• Public corruption involving elected officials or public servants
• Major violent crimes or complex criminal investigations
• Organized criminal activity or multi-jurisdictional crimes
• Officer-involved shootings or other critical incidents (when requested)
• Criminal matters formally referred by a District Attorney, Sheriff, or Police Chief
What the Texas Ranger Division Does Not Investigate
The Texas Ranger Division does not typically investigate:
• Administrative complaints about a local police department or sheriff’s office
• Civil disputes between private individuals
• Child custody or family court matters
• Employment disputes or workplace complaints
• Property disputes or neighborhood conflicts
