Peace Officer Supplement & Advanced Information

 

All Peace Officers/Federal Agents/Military Police selected to attend C-2023A or C-2023 will be guaranteed assignment to a specific Highway Patrol District, based on availability, prior to the Conditional Job Offer of the application process.

Applicant must have honorably served (full-time employed, benefits-eligible) as a sworn full-time paid peace officer or Federal Law Enforcement Officer as designated by the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Article 2.122, within two continuous years as of August 1, 2023.

The Department will not waive the two years of experience performing full-time paid law enforcement duties within two continuous years as of August 1, 2023. Additionally, the Department will not accept service time as a reserve officer, corrections/jailer, and communications operator.

The Out of State Peace Officer Supplemental Class is for a licensed out-of-state peace officer, Federal Agent/Officer, and Military Police that may be eligible to take the Texas State Licensing Exam based on prior service. https://www.tcole.texas.gov/content/out-state-peace-officers

  • Applicant must meet all statutory licensing requirements of the State of Texas and the rules of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement 
  • To qualify as a Federal Agent and Military Police, the applicant must meet the Federal Definition in the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure 2.122 or meet the Department's definition of two (2) years of full-time LEO experience.
    • Law Enforcement Officer experience is defined as time spent as a full-time paid employee performing Police duties in a position with a governmental entity, which requires a license as a Texas Peace Officer or its equivalent in another state.
    • Federal Law Enforcement experience with a Federal Agency given Special Investigator designation by the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Article 2.122 is acceptable as law enforcement experience.
  • The applicant must complete the online application.
  • The applicant must comply with the TCOLE requirements to be licensed as a Texas Peace Officer and must:
    • Provide a copy of their Texas Peace Officer License and meet requirements for the C-2023 Advanced Peace officer School or
    • Provide a copy of their TCOLE letter of eligibility endorsement and attend the C-2023A Out of State Peace Officer Supplemental Class.

               ** Do not submit the Exam Application to TCOLE prior to March 8, 2023 to avoid expiration.

  • The Applicants must complete and pass all phases of the Department's application process.

Important Options

Choose one of the following options to complete the TCOLE Peace Officer licensing process. 

 

Option A: C-2023A Out of State Peace Officer Class
(Base salary without overtime of $3,771.25 for 4-weeks)

Applicant qualifies and applies for the C-2023A Out of State Peace Officer Supplemental Class.

The applicant has completed the TCOLE requirements and received their letter of eligibility to take the 120-hour Texas Peace Officer Supplemental (1018) and any other required course by July 15, 2023. https://www.tcole.texas.gov/content/out-state-peace-officers

The applicant has successfully completed and passed all phases of the Department’s application process for the posted position and has provided a copy of their TCOLE letter of eligibility by July 15, 2023, could be selected to attend the resident 4-Week Out-of-State Peace Officer and Federal Agent Pre-Certification Class in Austin, Texas on August 7, 2023.

The applicant must be selected to attend the C-2023A Out of State Peace Officer Supplement Class. In addition, Department will provide the following:

  • Dorm Style living quarters during the 4-week duration.
  • Linen and towels provided, and use of washer/dryer
  • Weekends Off during the 4-week duration.
  • Three meals Monday – Thursday and two meals on Friday. 
  • Department issued Laptop with Wi-Fi access.
  • The candidate is paid 8 hours a day with full state benefits as a Department Employee
  • Department pays for online required courses.
  • Paid time to take the TCOLE Peace Officer licensing exam during the last week in Austin. 

Candidates passing the TCOLE Peace Officer Licensing Exam could be transferred to the 14-week C-2023 Advance Peace Officer Schools. Transfers depend on candidates’ performance, disciplinary action history while in the C-2023A class, and compliance with the Department’s Physical Fitness and Command Presence Standard. 

Option B: C-2023 Advanced Peace Officer School
(Base salary with overtime of $5,185.00 until graduation)

The applicant has successfully completed and passed all phases of the Department’s application process for the posted position and:

  • Applicant has submitted the Out of State/Federal application and other requirements to TCOLE.
  • Applicant has received the letter of eligibility endorsement from TCOLE. 
  • Applicant completes the online course and other requirements on their own time and funds.
  • Applicant is selected to attend the C-2023 Advance Peace Officer School.
  • Applicant passes the TCOLE Peace Officer Licensing Exam by August 01, 2023.
  • Applicant provides a copy of their Texas Peace Officer License by August 15, 2023.

Prior Law Enforcement Experience

Troopers completing the required Field Training Program (FTO) as defined by the Department and have at least four (4) years of verified full-time prior experience as a full-time peace officer in any state within the United States will advance to Trooper II salary. Troopers who have less than four (4) years of verified full-time prior experience as a peace officer in any state within the United States will advance to Trooper I salary until they reach four (4) years of combined law enforcement experience at which time they will advance to Trooper II salary.
