Weapons

August 30, 2020

Under Section 1033 of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 1997 (10 U.S.C.2576a) the Secretary of Defense may transfer to Federal and State agencies personal property of the Department of Defense, including weapons, that the Secretary determines is suitable for use by the agencies in law enforcement activities. The direct issue of weapons from Anniston, AL ceased in 2012, therefore, the only way to currently obtain weapons is via transfer from law enforcement agencies who no longer need their LESO issued weapons. In addition, allocation limits have been adjusted to the following:

  • 100% for all weapon types (1/1 weapon to officer ratio)
  • Weapons possibly available may include:
    • M14
    • M16
    • M1911
    • Shotguns

**NOTE** It is mandatory that LEAs secure all weapons (that are not in use) under 2 levels of security. Please ensure your agency is able to meet this requirement before requesting weapons.

To start this process, please submit your Weapon Request and Small Arms Justification (on agency letterhead) to txlesoprogram@dps.texas.gov.  Once approved, the Texas LESO office will match you up with an agency who's getting rid of their weapons and send instructions for completing the transfer. Questions regarding the weapon transfer process or related forms should be directed to your State Coordinator office.
