Weapons

August 30, 2020

Under Section 1033 of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 1997 (10 U.S.C.2576a) the Secretary of Defense may transfer to Federal and State agencies personal property of the Department of Defense, including weapons, that the Secretary determines is suitable for use by the agencies in law enforcement activities. The direct issue of Small Arms from Anniston, AL ceased in 2012, therefore, the only way to currently obtain Small Arms is by way of transfer from law enforcement agencies who no longer need their LESO issued Small Arms. In addition, allocation limits have been adjusted to the following:

  • 100% for all weapon types (1/1 weapon to officer ratio)
  • Small Arms available may include:
    • M14
    • M16
    • M1911
    • Shotguns

**NOTE** It is mandatory that LEAs secure all weapons (that are not in use) under 2 levels of security. Please ensure your agency is able to meet this requirement, before requesting weapons.

To start this process, please submit your signed, completed Small Arms Request to txlesoprogram@dps.texas.gov.  Once approved, the Texas LESO office will match you up with an agency who is getting rid of their weapons and send instructions for completing the transfer. Questions regarding the weapon transfer process or related forms should be directed to your State Coordinator office.
