Armored Vehicles

August 30, 2020

Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) wishing to acquire any armored vehicle must secure formal state pre-approval before initiating a digital request.

MRAP Allocation Restrictions

Because Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles are in high demand and rarely become available, they are treated as a strictly allocated commodity:

  • Upon paperwork approval, your agency is added to the National Priority List.
  • When an MRAP becomes available and is assigned to your department, our office will contact you directly with specialized pickup and logistics instructions.

Vehicle Ownership and Registration Workflow

Because LESO program vehicles remain federal property, your agency does not own them and cannot obtain a standard vehicle title. However, you can officially register them for insurance and operational purposes using the following state workflow:

  • Submit the Data Worksheet: Complete the Worksheet to Register Armored Vehicle (PDF) and email it to txlesoprogram@dps.texas.gov.
  • Receive Your Form: The Texas LESO office will process your worksheet data and return an official Form 1928 to your agency.
  • Visit the Tax Office: An authorized agency representative must sign Form 1928 and present it directly to your local county tax assessor-collector's office to finalize the exempt law enforcement registration.
