Keeping Texas Roads Safe

September 10 - October 9, 2025

Keeping Texas Roads Safe has been at the heart of DPS’ mission since its inception, but we need your help. That’s why we’re asking you, everyday Texans, to take an active role in making safe roads a priority across the Lone Star State.

Here are some simple ways you can make a big impact:

  • Eliminate distractions: Give the road your full attention when you’re driving. Doing things like texting while driving, putting on makeup or even eating just aren’t worth the risk. Just drive.
  • Move over or slow down: When you see emergency lights flashing on the side of the road, it’s time to move over or slow down — it's the LAW. When you pass emergency vehicles carefully, you help our Troopers, police, fire, EMS and other roadside personnel do their jobs safely and help ensure everyone makes it home.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Every day, 34 people die in the U.S. because of drunk driving crashes. We know that drunk driving deaths are preventable — always plan a sober ride home.
  • Buckle up — every rider, every time. Whether you are the driver or the passenger in a vehicle, always wear your seat belt, no exceptions.
  • Drive defensively and stay alert: A lot is happening on Texas roads, so be aware of your surroundings, and do your best to anticipate potential road hazards, bad weather and unexpected actions by other drivers. Staying alert can help keep you safe and avoid crashes.
