DPS Traffic Stop Leads to Weapons Seizure During OLS (DPS South Texas Region)

WESLACO – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) during Operation Lone Star seized more than a dozen firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition when a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper stopped a vehicle in Hidalgo County.

On May 21, 2021, at approximately 7:20 p.m., a DPS Trooper attempted to stop a gray Honda passenger vehicle traveling west on U.S. 83 near La Joya, for a traffic violation. The driver refused to stop, and a short vehicle pursuit ensued ending with the apprehension of the driver.

The Trooper discovered numerous firearms and ammunition within the vehicle. It included 16 firearms and 3,520 rounds of miscellaneous ammunition, which were seized from the car. The firearms included high-powered, fully automatic rifles, shotguns, handguns and a .50-caliber rifle.

DPS believes the weapons were destined for Mexico. The driver is currently facing weapons charges.
