Traffic Stop in Kleberg County Leads to Two Arrests

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) arrested two suspects on human smuggling and engaging in organized criminal activity charges after a traffic stop on Sunday, Nov. 3, in Kleberg County.

At approximately 10 p.m., a DPS Highway Patrol Trooper stopped the driver of a 2011 Chevrolet Impala traveling northbound on U.S. 77, two miles north of Riviera, for a traffic violation. The Trooper discovered through investigation that two female children, ages 2 and 5, were allegedly being smuggled from Central Mexico.

The driver, Christian Guzman, 20, and passenger, Crystal Mendoza, 23, were arrested and charged with human smuggling (second-degree felony) and engaging in organized criminal activity (Class A misdemeanor). Guzman, of Edcouch, and Mendoza, of Donna, were both transported to the Kleberg County Jail.

The two children were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol – Kingsville Station.
