Statement by DPS Director McCraw Regarding Memorial Day

May 25, 2017

AUSTIN – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven McCraw today issued the following statement regarding Memorial Day:

"Over the Memorial Day weekend, we remember and pay tribute to the many men and women who have valiantly answered the call of duty to protect and serve the United States of America. We would not enjoy the life and liberty each of us has today if not for the scores of heroes in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Many who answered that call paid the ultimate price, and we are reminded of their sacrifice on Memorial Day. Let us pledge to make sure the legacies of these true patriots live on forever, and let us honor them by living our lives in a way that is worthy of the great sacrifice they made for us.

We also remember the many military families who continue to live with the loss of a loved one who died in service to their country. We have a duty to show support for these family members by reassuring them that their service member will never be forgotten. It is impossible for us to ever express enough gratitude for our country's fallen heroes – but we should never stop trying.

We are also grateful to the thousands of men and women serving in the U.S. Military today, who carry on the esteemed legacy of the fallen patriots who came before them.

At DPS, we are keenly aware of the selfless dedication it takes to answer a call to duty that requires great courage – and this weekend, we honor all those who have knowingly placed themselves in harm's way and made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our nation safe."
