Fatal Crash in Brooks County Kills 10 (DPS-South Texas Region)

Corpus Christi – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a one vehicle multiple fatality crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at approximately 4:00 p.m. It happened on US 281 at the intersection of Business 281, approximately one and a half miles south of Encino, Texas, in Brooks County. The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a Ford passenger van was traveling north on US 281 in the outside lane when, according to a witness, the driver attempted to turn right at an unsafe speed and veered off the roadway, striking a metal utility pole and a stop sign. 

The driver and nine passengers were pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. U.S. Border Patrol BORTAC Operators were on scene and rendered aid to crash victims. Twenty passengers were then transported to several area medical centers including, McAllen Medical Center, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg, Edinburg Regional Hospital, Corpus Christi Spohn Shoreline and Spohn Kleberg in Kingsville, by Halo Flight, Angel Flight and ground ambulance.

The identities of the deceased will be released once they are properly identified and next of kin is notified.  DPS Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
