DPS Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Seizure

AMARILLO – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) seized close to 22 pounds of THC products, eight pounds of marijuana and over two pounds of fentanyl Monday, April 1, after a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper stopped a vehicle in Carson County.

At approximately 5:29 p.m., a DPS Trooper stopped a 2019 Kia Rio traveling east on I-40 near Conway, for a traffic violation. A DPS canine arrived on scene and alerted on the vehicle. The Trooper then discovered THC products, vacuum-sealed packages of marijuana and a plastic-wrapped bundle of fentanyl in the trunk.

The driver – Wanda Smith, 26, – and passenger – Lakayla Walker, 25, – both of Fairfield, California, were arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Smith and Walker were transported and booked into the Carson County Jail.

The drugs allegedly were being transported from Las Vegas, Nevada to Birmingham, Alabama.
