AMARILLO – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) seized nearly 80 pounds of cocaine Saturday, May 11, after a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper stopped a vehicle in Oldham County.
At approximately 2:21p.m., a DPS Trooper stopped a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac traveling east on I-40 near Vega, for a traffic violation. The Trooper then discovered multiple plastic-wrapped blocks of cocaine located inside two hidden compartments behind the back seats. The Trooper also located three additional plastic-wrapped blocks of cocaine in the factory storage area of the truck bed.
DPS Special Agents and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agents arrived on scene to assist with the investigation. DEA Special Agents adopted the case.
The driver – Assmir Contreras-Martinez, 30, of Tucson, Arizona – was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Contreras-Martinez was transported and booked into the Randall County Jail.
The drugs allegedly were being transported from San Diego, California to Miami, Florida.
