DPS Traffic Stop Leads to Drug and Cash Seizure

AMARILLO – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) seized more than $846,000 in cash and a small amount of oxycotin and methadone Monday, Oct. 14, after a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper stopped a vehicle in Carson County.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., a DPS Trooper stopped a 2010 Buick Enclave traveling west on I-40 near Conway, for a traffic violation. The Trooper then discovered the plastic-wrapped bundles of cash inside two after-market compartments built into the rear floor.

DPS Special Agents were contacted and assisted with the investigation.

The driver – Anthony Smith– and passenger – Andrew Gomez - both of Albuquerque, New Mexico – were arrested and charged with money laundering and possession of a controlled substance. Smith, 38, and Gomez, 24, were transported and booked into the Carson County jail.

The cash and drugs were allegedly being transported from Louisville, Kentucky, to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
