DPS, Local Authorities Schedule No Refusal Weekend

November 6, 2018

LUBBOCK – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), along with the Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, Texas Tech University Police Department and the Lubbock District Attorney's Office, will enforce a "no refusal" weekend Nov. 9 – 11. The goal of this multi-agency enforcement effort is to reduce DWI-related traffic crashes in the area.

DPS Troopers will coordinate their efforts with local officers and deputies to increase patrols in and around Lubbock. During the no refusal period, motorists who are arrested for driving while intoxicated and served with a search warrant, will be required to submit to evidentiary blood draws.

In 2017, there were 340 alcohol-related crashes in Lubbock County that resulted in 17 deaths, 21 serious injuries and 67 minor injuries, according to Texas Department of Transportation.

DPS reminds the public to plan ahead and make travel arrangements before you start drinking. Designate a sober driver or call a driver service to get you to your event and back home safely. Never let your friends drink and drive or ride in a vehicle with a driver who is intoxicated.
