DPS Launches Texas Highway Patrol Social Media Accounts

December 10, 2018

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) today announced the launch of new social media accounts (Facebook and Twitter) for the Texas Highway Patrol (THP). This expanded social media network will complement the existing DPS social media channels (Facebook and Twitter) and further connect the department with local communities on topics related to THP and the work by State Troopers to keep Texas safe.

"Every day, Texans see our Troopers patrolling the roadways and protecting our communities," said DPS Director Steven McCraw. "We are pleased to announce that now you will also see the Texas Highway Patrol on its own social media channels, where you can follow along and connect with this dedicated group of men and women proudly serving and protecting our state."

State Troopers conduct proactive, around-the-clock patrols across more than 300,000 miles of roadway in Texas. The new social media accounts will provide the public with information specifically related to THP and its multiple specialized units (Canine Unit, Mounted Horse Patrol Unit, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Tactical Marine Unit, Honor Guard, etc.), public safety news, helpful tips, traffic enforcement initiatives (holidays, Move Over/Slow Down, school bus safety, etc.), department activities and more.

"Our Troopers work hard to keep our roadways safe on a daily basis through traffic supervision, criminal law enforcement and public safety education," said THP Chief Ron Joy. "I look forward to our new social media channels serving as a way for us in law enforcement to connect with the people and the communities we serve, and to share a glimpse of what it's like behind-the-scenes in the Texas Highway Patrol."

Today's announcement builds on the department's recent efforts to expand its social media reach, including the launch of seven regional accounts in November.
