DPS Expands its Reading with a Trooper Program

August 28, 2018

BEAUMONT – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers in the Beaumont District are expanding the "Reading with a Trooper Program" this year in the rural school districts of East Texas. Since 2016, DPS Troopers in the area have read books to elementary school classes to foster a positive relationship between students and law enforcement.

This year, in addition to reading activities, Troopers will spend time with the students during school lunch and recreational times. The initiative by DPS seeks to enrich the reading curriculum, break down barriers between the students and law enforcement officers, and provide an opportunity for lifelong friendships to develop.

"This is just one of the ways Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers give back to the communities in which they serve and live," said Regional Director Jason Taylor.

The "Reading with a Trooper Program" has expanded to encompass school districts within Hardin, Jefferson, Orange, Tyler, Jasper and Newton counties.
