Before using the Get in Line, Online option, know what to bring for the following services

When using the ‘Get in Line Online’ option, you must be physically present in the office prior to the posted closing time.
Applicants must bring all required documents. All documents must be original or certified copies. We are unable to accept photocopies.

Note: DPS no longer issues both a Driver License (DL) and Identification (ID) card to an individual. Applicants holding both types of cards must surrender one at the time of transaction. Texas Transportation Code (TRC 521.183)

   Renew or Replace a Texas Driver License or Identification Card

Applicants must bring the following:

  1. A completed DL-43 application (this form is also available at the driver license office)
  2. Your current (or expired within two years) Texas DL or ID card. If you do not have a current Texas DL/ID card, we also accept other documents.
  3. U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence documents (i.e. birth certificate) may be required
  4. Applicable fee.
   Renew or Replace a Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL)

Bring current CDL and complete additional forms listed on the CDL Requirements page for the type of CDL for which you are applying. If you do not have a current Texas CDL, we also accept other documents.

   First-Time Texas Driver License or Learner License

Applicants must bring the following:

  1. A completed DL-14A application (this form is also available at the driver license office)
  2. Documents to verify your Social security
  3. Documents to verify your identity (i.e. birth certificate and insurance policy)
  4. U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence documents (i.e. birth certificate)
  5. Two documents from different sources showing your name and residential address to verify Texas residency (i.e. a utility bill and insurance card)
  6. Texas registration and insurance policy for all vehicles registered in your name (for out of state driver license applicants)
  7. Certificate of Completion for a driver education course (driver license applicants under 25 years of age)
  8. Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Certificate of Completion (for all driver license applicants required to take ITTD)
  9. Applicable fee.
   First-Time Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL)

All CDL applicants must bring a valid driver license and other identification documents, and complete additional forms listed on the CDL Requirements page for the type of CDL for which you are applying.

   First-Time Texas Identification Card

Applicants must bring the following:

  1. A completed DL-14A application (this form is also available at the driver license office)
  2. Documents to verify your Social security
  3. Documents to verify your identity (i.e. birth certificate and insurance policy)
  4. U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence documents (i.e. birth certificate)
  5. Two documents from different sources showing your name and residential address to verify Texas residency (i.e. a utility bill and insurance card)
  6. Applicable fee.
   Change Address or Name on a Texas Driver License, CDL or Identification Card

Applicants must bring the following:

  1. A completed DL-43 application for a Driver License or ID card or CDL-1 application for a Commercial Driver License CDL. (these forms are also available at the driver license office)
  2. Your current (or expired within two years) Texas DL or ID card. If you do not have a current Texas DL or ID card, we also accept other documents
  3. Applicable fee.

To change your NAME, you need one of the following documents:

  1. Marriage license
  2. Divorce decree
  3. Certified court order
  4. Amended birth certificate
  5. Foreign marriage license (in English)
  6. Foreign divorce decree (in English)
  7. Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship with accompanying Court Order
   Take Written Test or Add Endorsement

If the applicable fee has been paid and a DL-14A application or CDL-1 application has been completed, applicants only need to bring one form of identification to verify identity before taking the test. Otherwise, applicants must bring the following documents from the list below.

  1. A completed DL-14A application for a Driver License or CDL-1 application for a Commercial Driver License CDL. (these forms are also available at the driver license office)
  2. Documents to verify your Social security
  3. Documents to verify your identity (i.e. birth certificate and insurance policy)
  4. U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence documents (i.e. birth certificate)
