Commission Guards/MMPI

December 28, 2023

1. Who can administer the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)?

A licensed Psychologist or Psychiatrist can administer the MMPI.

2. Can I obtain an MMPI in another State?

Yes, if the Psychologist or Psychiatrist is licensed in the State where the MMPI is administered.

3. My MMPI is over 3 years old. Do I need a new one?

Unless withdrawn or denied, an MMPI is valid indefinitely.

4. Does the Department maintain a list of approved MMPI providers?

The Department does not maintain a list of approved MMPI providers. Please visit https://vo.licensing.hpc.texas.gov/datamart/mainMenu.do or https://www.tmb.state.tx.us/ to search for licensed Psychologists or Psychiatrists.

5. I am currently licensed as a Personal Protection Officer (PPO) and will be renewing my Commissioned Security Officer license. Do I need to take the MMPI again?

If an individual is licensed as a Personal Protection Officer and is renewing their Commission Security Officer license, we will attempt to use the MMPI on file.  You will be notified via email if we are unable to use the MMPI on file.

6. Does a completed TCOLE L-3 form satisfy the MMPI requirement?

The TCOLE L-3 form does not substitute for an MMPI.  A psychologist or psychiatrist completing an examination for the L-3 process could use a different test to meet TCOLE rules for examination of licensees.  We can accept the L-3 if the applicant submits proof in writing that their L-3 was signed as a result of them passing the MMPI (some examinations do include the MMPI).  We would need a letter from the agency, psychiatrist, or psychologist that verifies the MMPI was conducted, and that the L-3 was signed as a result of the applicant passing the MMPI.  This would apply regardless of peace officer status.

7. I am applying to be a Commissioned Security Officer. What do I need to submit?
