Trooper Daniel Robert Shown

Trooper Daniel Robert Shown, 66, passed away on February 27, 2026, from complications resulting directly from a line-of-duty injury sustained on December 16, 1988.

Trooper Shown, along with the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a report of an armed suspect who had threatened his family with a shotgun. Shortly after their arrival, the suspect opened fire on responding officers, striking Trooper Shown in the forehead. The injury resulted in the loss of his right eye and permanent paralysis on the left of his body.

Trooper Shown joined the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1980, graduating as a member of Class B-80. He was stationed in Fort Worth and Hillsboro before returning home to Waco in 1984, where he served for the remainder of his career until being medically retired in December 1988.

He is the 243rd DPS officer to die in the line of duty since 1835.
