April brought quite a bit of excitement as the threat of severe weather stood up several emergency operations centers across the state, including the State Operations Center (SOC).

April also brought us Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday! Hopefully your family had the chance to get restocked and prepared.

Looking ahead, May is going to be a busy and exciting month! Be sure to mark your calendars as there are a lot of celebrations, days of remembrance, preparation events, and of course, the Texas Emergency Management Conference. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone work together in May to make Texas a safer place to live and play.

Hurricane Preparedness Week

The State of Texas joins the National Weather Service (NWS) in recognizing Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 7-13. Hurricane season falls June 1 – November 30 each year, and it's time to get ready, Texas. Let's join the NWS and add these hurricane preparedness days to our calendars.

Sunday, May 7 – Determine your risk
Monday, May 8 – Develop an evacuation plan
Tuesday, May 9 – Assemble disaster supplies
Wednesday, May 10 – Secure an insurance check-up
Thursday, May 11 – Strengthen your home
Friday, May 12 – Check on your neighbor
Saturday, May 13 – Complete your written hurricane plan

Flood Awareness Week

Wear Blue, Texas! 2017 Flood Awareness Week is May 22-26. In recognition of Flood Awareness Week, May 24 is "Wear Blue" day. Texans, join me in wearing blue on May 24th.

2017 Texas Emergency Management Conference & TEMAC Meetings

There's still time! Register today for the 2017 Texas Emergency Management Conference (TEMC). Workshops are now posted so make sure to check out your favorite classes and instructors.

Texas Emergency Management Advisory Council (TEMAC) meetings were held in March in conjunction with the Emergency Management Association of Texas (EMAT) Symposium in San Marcos.  Upcoming TEMAC meetings are scheduled during the TEMC and are open to the emergency management community.
