Message From The Chief
Happy 2017, Texas! Many of us have made our New Year’s resolutions this year; to be healthier, to read more, to stop procrastinating. Whatever your New Year’s resolution may be, let’s add another one to the list – to be personally prepared for emergencies and disasters.
As a proud member of the emergency management community and Chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), I know we will work together to improve our preparedness. I invite you to read more about TDEM accomplishments and plans in my 2016 recap letter.
The year 2016 was a busy year for Texas with numerous severe weather events. After two federal disaster decelerations in 2015 with many areas of the state still in recovery, Texas started off 2016 with a new federal disaster declaration after deadly tornadoes at the end of the year. Severe weather continued for the first half of the year ending in with additional three federal disaster declarations.
As we begin 2017 we can start off on the right foot by reviewing basic preparedness measures. Texans must continue to be vigilant and ensure they are prepared for various forms of natural or man-made disasters that can occur.
Have a family plan!
Have a disaster supply kit!
Texas continues to lead the nation in major disaster declarations. We can work together to mitigate, prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impacts of disasters by preparing ourselves, our families and our communities. Have a safe, happy and healthy new year!
