Texas Emergency Management Conference

Chief W. Nim Kidd likes to explain it this way: “Just imagine stepping on to the playing field when the championships are at stake – never having met the players on your team – or talked to them face-to-face – before the game.

“One of the best ways to prepare for disasters in your community is to get to know the people in the emergency management community from across the state – and I can think of no better way to get to know your team members than by attending the Texas Emergency Management Conference,” Kidd added.

The Texas Emergency Management Conference was born in the 1960s as an annual confab among less than 250 civil defense directors and other personnel from around the state. Back then, the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Division of Emergency Management was known as the Division of Defense and Disaster Relief. The conference has grown in size to about 3,500 emergency management professionals.

Attendees include representatives from more than 30 agencies on the Governor’s Emergency Management Council, public officials from local, state and national governments, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, Texas Military Forces, non-profit and voluntary organizations and private sector partners. Officials from higher education, public education, health and medical care, border security and port security, transportation and cyber security also will attend.

“The Texas Emergency Management Conference provides great workshops but it also provides great opportunities for team building,” Kidd said. “These are the folks you will be asking assistance from – or providing assistance to – during emergency situations.”

The 2011 conference combines presentations, training, and workshops normally associated with the Texas Hurricane Conference and the Texas Homeland Security Conference.

“My background is firefighting. In the fire department, you and your buddies work together, train together, eat together. You have their back and they have yours. For communities involved in hurricane evacuations – the towns receiving your evacuees are your buddies and your back-up. The conference allows you to get to meet your backups in a non-stress situation.”

To make it more convenient for attendees and exhibitors alike, registration will be taking place in the exhibition hall this year. Scott Sutherland, of TDEM’s Plans Section, said: “Exhibitors have expressed greater interest in this year’s conference than ever before. There will be a number of innovations and activities in the hall this year we expect attendees will really enjoy.”
